Real Madrid’s injury list just got longer — and at the worst possible time. Austrian defender David Alaba has suffered a muscle overload in his right calf, ruling him out for about a week.

That means he will miss Sunday’s El Clásico against Barcelona, a fixture Madrid fans circle on their calendars every season.

It’s another twist in what’s been a frustrating comeback story for the 33-year-old. Alaba had only just returned to the starting lineup against Getafe, making his first La Liga start of the season.

But his night ended early as he was substituted at halftime, reportedly as a precaution. The club later confirmed the setback was more serious than expected.

Manager Xabi Alonso told reporters after the game, “Alaba has noticed, not an injury, but his calf was getting stiff. We’ll see tomorrow.”

By Tuesday, the picture was clearer — and not in a good way for Madrid.

When can David Alaba return from injury?

Alaba’s injury adds to Alonso’s growing defensive headache. Antonio Rudiger is still recovering from a leg issue, while Dani Carvajal and Trent Alexander-Arnold remain sidelined with calf and hamstring problems.

Dean Huijsen also missed the last match with a similar concern. Apparently, Madrid’s treatment room is busier than the Santiago Bernabeu on matchday.

Losing Alaba — a leader at the back and a calm presence on the ball — leaves Alonso short on options. As per reports, Alaba would be out for around 7 to 10 days.

The timing couldn’t be worse. After facing Juventus in the Champions League on Wednesday, Madrid host Barcelona in what could be an early title-shaping El Clásico.

Raul Asencio, who replaced Alaba against Getafe, is expected to partner Eder Militao in defense. It’s a partnership that hasn’t seen much action but might need to stand firm under the biggest of spotlights.

Alaba’s absence is particularly painful considering how hard he’s fought to return to full fitness. After a long spell out with ACL and meniscus injuries, he looked ready to re-establish himself in the starting XI.

Sadly, just as he seemed to have found his rhythm again, the injury bug bit back — and this time, right before the season’s biggest game.

Madrid fans will be hoping this is just a short layoff and not another chapter in Alaba’s ongoing battle with fitness.

But for now, Los Blancos must face Barcelona without one of their most experienced defenders — and that’s a setback even the mighty Madrid may feel.
