Week 5 of the 2025 NFL season begins with the San Francisco 49ers making the trip to Inglewood, California, to take on the Los Angeles Rams for “Thursday Night Football.”

Both teams enter the game 3-1, but San Francisco is notably beat up. Starting quarterback Brock Purdy is dealing with a toe injury and was expected to be listed as questionable for the contest. Instead, when the final injury report came out on Wednesday, Purdy was ruled out, paving the way for Mac Jones to start another game for the 49ers.

San Francisco’s injury report didn’t stop there as Ricky Pearsall and Jauan Jennings were also ruled out for the game, leaving the Niners’ offense depleted. 

Los Angeles comes into this game off a win over the Indianapolis Colts. Wide receiver Puka Nacua continued his hot start to the season and finished with 170 yards and a touchdown on 13 receptions. Veteran quarterback Matthew Stafford is already up to 1,114 passing yards with eight touchdowns and two interceptions in four games.

Linebacker Byron Young, who leads the Rams and is tied for the overall league lead with five sacks, will look to introduce himself to the San Francisco backfield early and often on Thursday night.

8:28 p.m.: On second down, Stafford rolls left and hits Nacua for his first reception of the night. After the five-yard reception, Kyren Williams gets his first touch on a two-yard carry, moving the chains.

8:22 p.m. TOUCHDOWN: San Francisco might be without some major weapons, but it didn’t stop the 49ers from making a statement in the opening minutes.

On 1st and goal from the Rams 6, Jones finds a wide open Jake Tonges for a touchdown to open the scoring. The quarterback was 5-for-5 for 77 yards and a touchdown on the drive.

8:20 p.m.: Jones’ first connection of the night to a player not-named McCaffrey is Kendrick Bourne.

Jones hits Bourne, his former Patriots teammate, on a drag route, and Bourne takes it 35 yards before being brought down right outside of the red zone.

8:18 p.m.: The first three 49ers plays have both ended up in CMC’s hands.

After opening up with a short-yardage run, Jones hits McCaffrey on a screen pass and the receiver finds space, turning it upfield for 15 yards.

With a new set of downs, Jones finds McCaffrey underneath again, and the running back picks up a first down for the second straight play. He has two receptions for 30 yards on the first drive of the game.

8:16 p.m.: The Rams have kicked off and we are underway in Los Angeles.

8:10 p.m.: Teams have entered the field and we are moments away from kickoff.

7:50 p.m.: Both quarterbacks are on the field before tonight’s contest. Mac Jones is ready for his third start of the season.

Los Angeles’ Matthew Stafford is coming off a 375 yards, three touchdown performance against the Colts.

7:28 p.m.: With key offensive pieces out, San Francisco is going to need a big game out of superstar running back Christian McCaffrey.

The 2023 Offensive Player of the Year is yet to have a rushing touchdown this season. He has 225 yards on 69 carries.

7:20 p.m.: We have more stars out at SoFi Stadium, including Ric Flair and LAFC’s Son Hueng-Min.

 

Son joined Los Angeles from Tottenham Hotspur before the season. 

7:03 p.m.: The 49ers and Rams have a detailed history, including the regular season finale in 2021. San Francisco was down 14 points and came all the way back to win the game.

The two teams met later that season in the NFC Championship. The Rams, who lost to San Francisco twice in the regular season, won en route to their second Super Bowl title.

6:55 p.m.: It’s not “Thursday Night Football” in Los Angeles without celebrities. That includes Kirk Herbstreit’s dog, Peter.

Peter, who travels with his owner to all the “Thursday Night Football” and “College GameDay” sets, is a national celebrity. 

6:44 p.m.: ESPN’s Adam Schefter has posted the 49ers starting offense for tonight.

San Francisco has posted its inactives for tonight, including Purdy, Jennings, Pearsall and George Kittle. 

6:34 p.m.: We have both former 49ers and Rams on the “Thursday Night Football” crew, and they’re not afraid to show it. First, it’s Richard Sherman, who played for the 49ers from 2018 to 2020.

On the other side, both Ryan Fitzpatrick and Andrew Whitworth played for the Rams. Whitworth won the Super Bowl in 2021 with Los Angeles, his final game before retiring. 

6:20 p.m.: The Rams have arrived for tonight’s game, including star wide receiver Davante Adams.

Adams, the northern California native, has 46 catches for 633 yards and has scored 7 touchdowns in 5 regular games against San Francisco in his career. He has caught a touchdown in every game.

6:05 p.m.: SoFi Stadium is ready for primetime. As usual, Thursday Night Football will be on Prime Video.

Week 4’s “Thursday Night Football” broadcast featured the other two NFC West teams with the Seattle Seahawks facing the Arizona Cardinals. Seattle won that contest, 23-20.

5:00 p.m.: San Francisco will be down most of its receiving core with both Ricky Pearsall and Juan Jennings being ruled out. Here are all the active wide receivers for the road team tonight.

4:21 p.m.: Mac Jones has arrived ahead of Thursday Night Football. Jones backed up Brock Purdy on Sunday against the Jacksonville Jaguars, but Purdy was ruled out for tonight’s contest earlier in the week.

Jones has 563 yards, four touchdowns and an interception in two starts with San Francisco. The 49ers are 2-0 with Jones as a starter.

“Thursday Night Football” between the 49ers and Rams will kick off at 8:15 p.m. ET. The game will be held at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California, which means it will begin at 5:15 p.m. PT local time.
