Two sides desperate not to fall too far behind in the Premier League table meet in a Sunday spotlight match as Newcastle United host title hopefuls Arsenal at St. James’ Park.

The Gunners find themselves five points adrift from league leaders Liverpool but have a chance to draw closer after the Reds fell to Crystal Palace on Saturday, their first dropped points of the domestic campaign.

Newcastle have experienced a spotty start to the new season, with just one win and six points in total from their first five Premier League games. That has left the Magpies with a significant early gap to make up if they are to remain in the hunt for European qualification.

Newcastle United vs. Arsenal live updates, highlights from Premier League

1 hour 13 mins to kickoff: Arsenal have gone a bit early with their team news. Eberechi Eze starts, but interestingly, he’ll be in central midfield, with Leandro Trossard further forward. Cristhian Mosquera keeps his place at the back, with William Saliba not yet risked from the start. Martin Odegaard is on the bench.

1 hour 29 mins to kickoff: It’s a glorious day in England’s north east.

2 hours to kickoff: It seemed every Premier League title contender except Liverpool had started slowly, Arsenal included. So with the Reds finally blinking, and no more perfect clubs left in the English top flight, it is imperative that the Gunners snatch three points today and pull within two.

That will be a tough task indeed, as Eddie Howe has traditionally given Mikel Arteta fits. Even when Arsenal were at their best last season, they could not get results against Newcastle.

Newcastle United vs. Arsenal lineups, team news

It will be interesting to see if Eddie Howe sticks with the 3-5-2 he trialed during the 0-0 draw with Bournemouth last time out, or if he reverts back to the 4-3-3 that’s been his regular base setup.

Newcastle are without Yoane WissaFabian Schar, and Jacob Ramsey due to injuries, but Jacob Murphy has passed fit and will be available for selection.

Howe started a strong lineup against Bradford City midweek in the EFL Cup third round, so he will have some decisions to make on squad rotation, with Anthony GordonAnthony ElangaBruno Guimaraes, and Joelinton amongst those who logged at least an hour in that match on Wednesday.

Newcastle projected starting lineup (3-5-2): Pope (GK) — Thiaw, Botman, Burn — Livramento, Tonali, Guimaraes, Joelinton, Barnes — Elanga, Woltemade.

Newcastle subs: (Lineups released one hour prior to kickoff)

Arsenal’s injury list just keeps on ticking over, a frustrating new normal for Mikel Arteta over the last 18 months.

Piero Hincapie is the latest to pick up a new fitness issue, as a groin problem has ruled him out until after the October international break. Kai Havertz continues to work towards a comeback in about a month, while in-form Noni Madueke will miss a number of weeks due to a knee injury. The status of Martin Odegaard is fluid, as he works back from a recurrence of his shoulder issue.

Madueke’s injury likely means a run in the first-team for Eberechi Eze, although he starts in central midfield today. Leandro Trossard and Bukayo Saka flank Viktor Gyokeres in attack.

Arsenal starting lineup (4-3-3): Raya (GK) — Timber, Mosquera, Gabriel, Calafiori — Eze, Zubimendi, Rice — Saka, Gyokeres, Trossard.

Arsenal subs: Kepa, Saliba, Lewis-Skelly, White, Odegaard, Norgaard, Merino, Martinelli, Dowman
