Derrick Henry has proven to be one of football’s greatest-ever racehorses at the running back position. But even the greats have their flaws.
The Baltimore Ravens tailback tends to leave his adversaries cowering in his wake, using an assortment of stiff-arms, shoulder barges and brute force to displace the gang of reactionaries that lies before him.
But in recent weeks, his game has been marked by another distinct trait: fumbles.
Henry has turned the ball over more times than most in 2025. The giveaways proved especially costly in losses to the Buffalo Bills in Week 1 and the Detroit Lions in Week 3.
Is Henry’s fumbling problem real? Or is it merely a mirage? Here’s what you need to know.

How many fumbles does Derrick Henry have in 2025?
Henry has coughed the ball up a league-leading three times this season, with all three coming in successive games. He fumbled at a critical juncture against the Bills, putting the ball on the ground with the Ravens clinging to a one-score lead and 3:10 left in the fourth quarter.

Buffalo swiftly burst into the end zone four plays letter, cutting the Ravens’ advantage to two. It went on to win the game, 41-40, courtesy of a Matt Prater chip shot at the horn.
“First of all, I got to take care of the ball,” Henry said postgame. “Told my teammates at the game, but it’s also me. I own it like a man. We emphasize taking care of the ball. That’s a big emphasis, especially in our room at running back, taking care of the football, keeping it high and tight and not lackadaisical, and they made a play.
“I put this loss on me. If I take care of the ball feel like it be a different situation.”
Henry’s second fumble of the year proved less consequential, coming in the second quarter of Baltimore’s 41-17 beatdown of the Browns in Week 2. Cameron Mitchell jarred the ball loose from the future Hall of Famer just as he was reaching top speed. Fortunately for the Ravens, Tylan Wallace recognized the danger and sprawled to corral the loose ball as it trickled across the field.

The latest of Henry’s giveaways came in Baltimore’s defeat to the Lions. Down 28-24 with a little more than eight minutes left in regulation, the Ravens called Henry’s number. He crashed into a sea of defenders at the line of scrimmage, with Detroit star Aidan Hutchinson ripping the ball from his grasp. The loose ball fell into the hands of a waiting D.J. Reed, setting up another Lions score.
Henry was bemused as he walked to the sideline, slamming his helmet down before falling onto the bench.

Following the game, Henry told reporters he issued an apology to his teammates and coaching staff.
“All I can do is keep working,” Henry said, per the Baltimore Banner’s Jonas Shaffer.
During Baltimore’s mid-week availability ahead of its Week 4 contest with the Chiefs, Henry reaffirmed his desire to cut the issue out of his game.
