The Detroit Tigers are in rough shape. With the regular season winding down, they have now lost seven games in a row and lost their sole lead of the American League Central division.
The Cleveland Guardians, who have been playing well over the last few weeks, have clawed their way back up the division standings, and the two clubs play two more games against each other this week. There is no denying how important these games are.
Trying to get back in the win column, the Tigers made a roster move ahead of their Wednesday game. According to Cody Stavenhagen, the club recalled Justyn-Henry Malloy while optioning Jace Jung.
Justyn-Henry Malloy could provide a spark for the Tigers
Jace Jung has not moved the needle for the Tigers this season. He has appeared in 21 games, hitting .106/.236/.106 with no home runs and just three runs batted in. He was recently recalled from Triple-A after Colt Keith headed to the IL with right rib cage inflammation.
Justyn-Henry Malloy has played 49 games for Detroit this season. He was called up in the middle of the season when Parker Meadows was on the IL, but was optioned when he was healthy enough to return.
Detroit could look at Malloy as a right-handed hitting bench option and someone the team can go to when facing left-handed pitching. He was doing well in Triple-A, making this move almost a no-brainer for the front office. Hopefully, Malloy can provide a spark for a team that has nearly lost its identity over the last few weeks.
