The New York Mets find themselves in one of the toughest spots in MLB right now, having essentially played themselves out of the playoffs. This isn’t how the season was expected to go — instead, it has turned into a huge mess on a collision course.
“The New York Mets, losers of six straight, are down 6-0 and facing Jacob deGrom. Since starting 45-24 and owning the best record in MLB, the Mets are 31-47, better than only the Rockies, Twins and Nationals. This isn’t a collapse. It’s a disintegration,” Passan posted.
The Mets are still focused on making the playoffs, and rightfully so, but the fate is no longer in their own hands. They’ve opened the door for the Cincinnati Reds.
“The Cincinnati Reds now control their destiny for the third wild card spot in the National League. They own the tiebreaker over the New York Mets, who previously had been in control of a playoff spot every day since April 5,” Passan wrote.
To make matters worse, the Mets could lose one of their top players in free agency if things don’t improve. Pete Alonso has done many amazing things for the organization, but his comments about next season in New York seem uncertain.
“If I had a nickel for how many times everyone in this room has said that and I received it every time someone said it, I’d be really, really rich,” Alonso said.

There’s no doubt the Mets have dug themselves into a massive hole. In the coming week, New York must outperform the Reds — or it’s over.
After such a hot start, this potential downfall would be crushing. The Mets are aiming for postseason baseball, but their remaining schedule isn’t exactly easy.
