The San Francisco 49ers announced Thursday morning that quarterback Brock Purdy will miss 2-5 weeks because of turf toe.
Purdy suffered the injury during the 49ers’ 17-13 loss to the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday. He threw for 277 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions.
That means former Alabama quarterback Mac Jones will likely get the start for the 49ers against the New Orleans Saints.
Jones was a former first-round draft pick of the New England Patriots, and as a rookie, he led them to the playoffs.
But two years later, Jones was traded to the Jacksonville Jaguars to back up Trevor Lawrence and played for him when he got injured at the end of last season.
A lot of people, including 49ers great Joe Montana, thought that the 49ers should have drafted Jones.
“If I were the 49ers, I would have taken the kid (Mac Jones) from Alabama last year,” Joe Montana said fours ago on ESPN’s “College Football Live” show. “Nothing against the guy (Trey Lance) that they took, it’s just a more pro-style offense, more used to being in tough situations.”
Montana was right. Ironically, it was third-stringer Brock Purdy who beat him out for the starting position.
Lance eventually ended up as a backup for the Dallas Cowboys. 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan said the team is still in the market for another quarterback and a tight end.
Tight end George Kittle was also put on the disabled list.
Shanahan said Wednesday the team would “like to” bring in two new players for these positions this week, starting with working on signing a tight end first. Shanahan is unsure whether the team will have roster room for a quarterback, but they are looking into it.
