The New York Knicks are positioning themselves for a successful 2025-26 campaign, having added premium depth to their already talented roster during a solid offseason.

But what if the Knicks can’t get over the hump?

In what is already a weakened Eastern Conference, it would be an incredible disappointment if New York can’t at least make it back to the Conference Finals. They would have no choice but to push all their chips in to put themselves over the top for the 2026-27 season.

Knicks Could Pursue LeBron James in 2026 Free Agency

Going all in may include pursuing veterans with a championship pedigree, and there would be no better player available in the Summer of 2026 than LeBron James.

James, who would be 41 by then, is reportedly unsure whether he plans to play beyond this season. But considering how productive he is even at his current age, could absolutely continue his illustrious NBA career.

Jeremy Brener of Sports Illustrated recently wrote about why it would be a positive for the Knicks to bring in one of the greatest basketball players to ever play the game.

“The Knicks are trying to win sooner rather than later and they know they are in the middle of their championship window. Signing LeBron as a free agent in the offseason would be a sign that they are following through on the principle they set out for themselves when they fired head coach Tom Thibodeau three months ago.” Wrote Brener.

“While adding LeBron would likely mean parting ways with one of their key core members, it would follow the pattern the Knicks have created that have brought them close to a championship. Signing LeBron could be the final step New York needs to reach the goals it covets.”

LeBron and the Knicks have always been rumored to have a connection, as James has made it known publicly how much he loves New York and Madison Square Garden.

If the four-time NBA champion wanted to finish his NBA career at a special and storied place other than Los Angeles, the Knicks would fit the bill as a team ready to win now.
